About Me
Fred Salaff Photography
-Each photograph is not just an image but a moment immortalized, and a glimpse into the human experience.-
When I was 7 years old my father bought me a drugstore home darkroom kit. I took photos on a Kodak Brownie camera, I took lots pf pictures
of family, friends, pets and whatever or whoever was near me or caught my untrained eye. I developed the film and made contact prints with a rudimentary light box my dad constructed for me. I read photography, looked at the work of Cartier-Bresson, David Douglas Duncan, Eugene Smith and so many other greats. I was hooked on everything to do with photography.
Most of my life has been devoted to photography. Along the way I was very much into classical music, (My college degree at the University of Texas is in cello and composition). While at this wonderful school I had the honor of being selected to be in a special class of aspiring photographers taught by depression era Farm Security Administration photographer, Russell Lee.He taught me to always be observant and patient and that something will always pass in front of your frame. He also taught dark room techniques which produced very similar results with what Eugene Smith as so good at. Was he ever right!
After 5 terrific years in Austin, Texas I moved back to New York and found work as a music teacher. However, an old friend who made travel films for airlines hired me to do his publicity photos. It was my first job as a professional photographer! I was thrilled at the opportunity and at the same time I learned about film making – all on exotic locations!
After several years of shooting both stills and 35mm travel films I decided to hang out my own “shingle.” No one knocked on my door! I made some experimental 16mm films and continued with my street photography; mainly in New York City. I lucked out again and ended up getting film and photography jobs from artists and multi-national corporations and eventually from European tv networks. It was a dream coming true. I got to travel and photograph around the world and had great clients.
Now, more than 10 decades after my photo and film journey began, I want to share some of images which include travel, street photography, portraits, documentary, glamour, and erotica.
